Pangasius hypothalamus marketed as Swai, Tra, and Striped Pangasius is a fast growing catfish species native to Southeast Asia. Primarily cage raised in the Mekong river delta, popularity of this species has grown tremendously over the last decade. Its white flesh and low fat content yield mild, flakey fillets.
Large volume production and sustainable aquaculture practices have helped keep this fish priced among the lowest produced proteins. In recent years, Pangasius substitution for more expensive local catches have placed this species in the forefront of political intervention.
Tariffs on the import of Swai have been placed to help keep domestic Channel catfish competitive in domestic markets.
